Project Update for N. Central Street

May 26, 2017 N. Central Street Update – This past week, KUB’s contractor Adams and Sons, Inc., completed service line connections and fire line/hydrant installations on the section of N. Central between Pearl Place and Baxter Avenue. Additionally, side street tie-ins to the new water main were completed on Hinton Avenue and W. Baxter Avenue.

The contractor will not work on Monday, May 29, in observance of Memorial Day; however, all implemented traffic control measures will remain in place. Construction activity will resume on Tuesday, May 30, as crews are scheduled to complete the side street tie-in at E. Baxter Avenue. Also next week, crews will resume installation of the new water main starting at the Baxter Avenue intersection and progressing north.

The overall project includes installation of the new water main up to the N. Central Street/Woodland Avenue intersection, with completion scheduled for early summer 2017 (weather permitting).

Please note that street parking is prohibited on both sides of N. Central Street between Baxter Avenue and Woodland Avenue for the duration of the project.

The overall existing traffic pattern remains in place, with both northbound lanes and the northbound bicycle lane closed continuously for the duration of work on this section of N. Central Street. Traffic flow is maintained in both directions, however, with one northbound and one southbound lane shifting to the southbound side of N. Central Street. Southbound bicycle traffic is instructed to merge with vehicle traffic through the work zone. All turn lanes remain open in the N. Central Street and N. Broadway intersection.

Vehicle traffic is advised to remain aware of the ongoing presence of workers, equipment, traffic channeling devices, barricades, and signs in this area.

Project Update for N. Central Street

May 19, 2017 N. Central Street Update – With the water main installed through the Baxter Avenue intersection, KUB’s contractor Adams and Sons, Inc., began service line connections, fire hydrant/line installs, and completed one side street tie-in at Pearl Place this past week.

Next week, crews will continue with service line connections, fire hydrant/line installs, and side street tie-ins at Hinton Avenue and W. Baxter Avenue. Some work will be performed at night to minimize customer and traffic impacts. Crews will complete fire line tie-ins at 1000 and 1013 N. Central Street from 8 p.m.-midnight on Monday, May 22. The Hinton Avenue tie-in is scheduled for Tuesday, May 23, from 8 p.m.-midnight. The W. Baxter Avenue tie-in work will also be completed overnight, starting at 8 p.m., Thursday, May 25, and lasting through 2 a.m., Friday, May 26.

Lovell Road Gas Main Relocation Project

May 15, 2017 - KUB will host a public meeting Thursday, May 18, starting at 6 p.m. at Providence Church/Worship Center, 1432 Lovell Road, to discuss an upcoming natural gas relocation project in the Lovell Road area, between Cedardale Lane and Middlebrook Pike.  

KUB is currently evaluating possible natural gas main relocation routes ahead of a TDOT/Knox County roadway widening project on Lovell Road.

The public meeting will start with a brief presentation outlining the scope of the project and the construction process. Following the presentation, KUB representatives will be available to talk with customers one-on-one regarding their specific questions.   

Surveying and design work is scheduled to begin later in May. Construction is scheduled to start in spring 2018, with completion scheduled for winter 2019.

Project Update for the N. Central Street Streetscapes Project

May 12, 2017 N. Central Street Update – This past week, KUB’s contractor Adams and Sons, Inc., completed water main installation through the Baxter Avenue intersection. Testing procedures continued in this area through the end of the week.

Next week, crews will begin service line connections and fire hydrant installations on the section between Dameron Avenue to the north side of the Baxter Avenue intersection. Crews will also begin scheduling tie-ins to connect side street mains over the next several weeks, including Dameron Avenue, Pearl Place, Hinton Avenue, and Baxter Avenue. Updates will be posted for any side street closures related to tie-in work. The overall project includes installation of the new water main up to the N. Central Street/Woodland Avenue intersection, with completion scheduled for early summer 2017 (weather permitting).

Project Update for W. Jackson Avenue

(Old City) West Jackson Avenue Road Closure [Overnight, May 11- 12] – KUB crews will close a short section of West Jackson Avenue, between North Central Street and State Street, overnight from 11:30 p.m., Thursday, May 11, through 5 a.m., Friday, May 12, as fire hydrants and corresponding water lines in the area are relocated. Alternate routes include North Central Street, South Central Street, State Street, and North Gay Street. Access to businesses and public parking in the area will be maintained, and signs will be on site to assist with traffic control.

South Knox Natural Gas Gate Station and Main Relocation Project

May 8, 2017 - KUB will host a public meeting Thursday, May 11, starting at 6 p.m. at South Doyle High School in the Cyber Café/Young Campus (second floor), 2020 Tipton Station Road, to discuss an upcoming natural gas project in the Tipton Station Road/Chapman Highway area of South Knox County.  

KUB’s plans in this area include construction of a new natural gas gate station at 304 Tipton Station Road and the relocation of a natural gas main ahead of a TDOT roadway project on Chapman Highway.

The public meeting will start with a brief presentation outlining the scope of the project and the construction process. Following the presentation, KUB representatives will be available to talk with customers one-on-one regarding their specific questions.   

Surveying and design work is scheduled to begin later in May. Construction on the new gate station is scheduled to begin in November 2017, and gas main installation is expected to start in January 2018. The overall project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2018.

Project Update for N. Central Street

May 5, 2017 N. Central Street Update – This past week, KUB’s contractor Adams and Sons, Inc., completed tie-ins to the new water main at the N. Central Street and Broadway intersection. This work was performed during overnight hours May 2-4 to lessen impacts to customers and traffic.

Crews also worked overnight Thursday into Friday morning as the new water main was installed through the N. Central Street/Baxter Avenue intersection. This work completes installation of the new water main on the section of N. Central between Dameron Avenue and Baxter Avenue.
