West Hills Natural Gas Project

February 23, 2018 UPDATE – KUB Underground construction crews continued to connect customer service lines to the new main in the 7800 block of Corteland Drive. Crews will continue to work in this area next week before moving to the 8000 block of Corteland Drive and the 700-800 block of Marlboro Road. Crews will also work in the 900 block of Marlboro Road and the 900 block of Carrington Road.

South Knox Natural Gas Project

February 23, 2018 UPDATE – Contractor Cleary Construction continued working on clearing the ROW in the areas noted on the project map. Crews also continued to mobilize equipment and materials to the jobsite.  Site clearing and mobilization will continue through early March. Next week, crews will begin connecting sections of pipe above ground in the utility right-of-way in preparation for installation in early March.

Depot Avenue Water Line Project

February 23, 2018 UPDATE – Garney Construction crews are scheduled to complete installation of the 36-inch water main along Blackstock Avenue by the middle of next week. The road closure on Blackstock Avenue will remain in effect between Oak Avenue and Van Street, however, as paving and roadway restoration is completed. Construction crews will to progress north next week, setting up a new work zone on Van Street, between Blackstock Avenue and W. Fifth Avenue. This section of Van Street will be closed to through traffic, but access will be maintained to businesses. between Oak Avenue and Van Street. Work will continue in this area through next week. Crews will continue saw cutting of asphalt on E. Depot Avenue and Morgan Street next week. This work will require intermittent daily lane closures in the immediate work area. Flaggers will be present to assist with traffic flow in these areas.

Sequoyah Hills Wastewater Rehabilitation Project

February 23, 2018 UPDATE – Hurst Excavating subcontractor crews installed 705 Ft of 8" sewer main, replaced two manholes, and renewed eight customer services laterals in the 600 and 700 block of Scenic Drive, and 400 block of Alta Vista Way this past week. Paving and roadway restoration crews worked in the 400, 500, and 600 block of Scenic Drive. Next week, crews will continue work in off road easements near Alta Vista Way, and between Valencia Drive and Scenic Drive. The contractor will also set manholes in the 700 block of Scenic Drive next week.

Sequoyah Hills Wastewater Rehabilitation Project

TRAFFIC ADVISORY

(Sequoyah Hills) Scenic Drive Road Closure [February 21 – March 23] – KUB contract crews will implement a closure of a short section of Scenic Drive between Towanda Trail and Oakhurst Drive daily, from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, starting Wednesday, February 21, through Friday, March 23, as work is performed on the wastewater collection system in the area. Alternate routes include Woodhill Place and Oakhurst Drive, with local traffic access only maintained for residents. The roadway will be reopened after hours and on weekends. Appropriate signage and flaggers will be on site to assist with traffic control. Follow-up advisories will be issued as necessary.

February 16, 2018 UPDATE – KUB Underground construction crews installed a new natural gas service line to connect West Hills Presbyterian Church (7600 Bennington Drive) to the new main. Work will continue on the 7800 block of Corteland Drive in Zone 1 and the 700-900 blocks of Marlboro Road in Zone 3.

February 16, 2018 UPDATE – Contractor Cleary Construction continued working on clearing the ROW in the areas noted on the project map. Crews also continued to mobilize equipment and materials to the jobsite.  Site clearing and mobilization will continue through February 23.

February 16, 2018 UPDATE – Garney Construction crews continued installation of the 36-inch water main along Blackstock Avenue, between Oak Avenue and Van Street. Work will continue in this area through next week. Crews will also perform saw cutting of asphalt on Williams Street (February 19), E. Depot Avenue (February 19-22), and Morgan Street (February 22-23). This work will require intermittent daily lane closures in the immediate work area. Flaggers will be present to assist with traffic flow in these areas. Paving work continues on the section of Blackstock Avenue between Tulip Avenue and Oak Avenue.

Sequoyah Hills Wastewater Rehabilitation Project

February 16, 2018 UPDATE – Hurst Excavating crews installed 442 Ft of 8" sewer main, replaced two manholes, and renewed six customer services laterals in the 400 and 600 block of Scenic Drive this past week. Next week, crews will continue work in the 600 block and begin work in the 700 block of Scenic Drive. Toward the end of next week, one crew will begin work in the utility easement between Alta Vista Way and Scenic Drive. Weather permitting, and pending completion of work in the 600 and 700 block of Scenic Drive, the contractor will shift the work zone to the 1100 block of Southgate Road, near Sequoyah Library. An updated map will be issued prior to work shifting to this area.  Restoration and paving crews will begin working next week in the 400 block of Scenic Drive and work their way south.

February 9, 2018 UPDATE - Crews continued work in the 7800, 7900, and 8000 blocks on Corteland Drive to finish up boring in the final section of new natural gas main in Zone 1. Crews moved to Marlboro Drive in Zone 3 this week. They will continue to work in that area through next week, weather permitting.

South Knox Natural Gas Project

February 9, 2018 UPDATE - KUB's contractor, Cleary Construction, began mobilizing equipment and materials on the job site this week. Cleary has set up a laydown area for equipment and materials storage on Mountain Grove Road, near the Food City grocery store. Subcontractor JMC Surveying began placing marker flags along the project right-of-way, and they will continue with that activity next week. Cleary is expected to begin prep work in the right-of-way for pipeline installation next week. This work will include establishing construction entrances, clearing and grubbing of vegetation, installation of orange safety fencing, and set up of sediment and erosion control measures.

Sequoyah Hills Wastewater Rehabilitation Project

February 9, 2018 UPDATE - KUB and it's contractor, Hurst Excavating, mobilized onsite and implemented the traffic control plan this week to close the section of Scenic Drive between Kingston Pike and Towanda Trail weekdays between 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. as construction activity began on Phase 1 of the Sequoyah Hills Wastewater Rehabilitation Project. Crews began saw-cutting asphalt in preparation for excavation, and fusing sections of pipe together prior to installation. Hurst crews will continue to progress south along Scenic Drive and Southgate Road over the next several months. KUB must complete digging work on Scenic Drive and Southgate Road during this time frame to accommodate the City of Knoxville's paving schedule for this area. Project updates, including a map that shows the current active work zones and traffic impacts will be will be issued at the end of each week for the duration of the project. Special notices, such as traffic advisory updates, etc., will also be posted on the blog outside of the regular weekly update.

Depot Avenue Water Line Project

February 9, 2018 UPDATE - Garney Construction crews have worked their way up Blackstock Avenue to the Oak Avenue intersection with installation of the 36-inch water main. Paving crews have completed roadway and sidewalk restoration up to the Tulip Avenue intersection.

Next week, Garney will implement the traffic control plan to close the road and install pipe in the section of Blackstock Avenue between Oak Avenue and Van Street. Crews will also return to the intersection of Blackstock Avenue and Heins Street on February 14 (weather permitting) to install a vault for a new water valve in this area. Paving work will also continue in areas where excavation has been completed.

Depot Avenue Water Line Project

February 2, 2018 Depot Avenue Area Water Main Installation Project Update – KUB contractor Garney Construction completed rehabilitation of a short section of wastewater main in the Hannah Avenue/Ramsey Street/Blackstock Avenue intersection this week. This section of roadway will remain closed for paving and sidewalk restoration through the middle of next week.

Garney crews will continue installation of the 36-inch main next week, progressing north toward Oak Avenue. As the work zone progresses, crews will implement a road closure on the section of Blackstock Avenue between Oak Street and Van Street, possibly by the end of next week. Crews and equipment are expected to remain in this area through mid-February, weather permitting.

Crews also continued activity to bore a section of pipe under railroad tracks in the W. Fifth Avenue area. Work in this area is expected to last approximately two months.

KUB will post weekly updates on this blog for the duration of the project.

(North Knoxville) Blackstock Avenue Road Closure [Updated, February 5-16] – KUB contract crews will continue water distribution system work on Blackstock Avenue and shift the traffic control east as the project progresses:
  • February 5-8 - Blackstock Avenue closed continuously between Hannah Avenue and Oak Avenue. The intersection of Hannah Avenue and Blackstock Avenue will be paved midweek, and then reopened. 
  • February 8-16 – Blackstock Avenue closed continuously between Oak Avenue and Van Street
Alternate routes include Western Avenue, Broadway, and Oak Avenue. Access to local businesses will be maintained, and flaggers and signs will be on site to assist with traffic control.



West Hills Area Natural Gas Project

February 2, 2018 West Hills Natural Gas Main Replacement Project Update –KUB Underground Construction crews worked in the 7800 block of Bennington Drive this week. Next week, crews will complete remaining boring in Zone 1, which is the 7900 and 8000 block of Corteland Drive. Once that is complete, crews will continue to Zone 3, which beings on Malrboro Road. Please refer to the project map for detailed zone information.

Crews will be in the area of 7400 Bennington and the 7800 block of Corteland Drive next week.

Construction Set to Begin Next Week on Sequoyah Hills Wastewater
Rehabilitation Project
First Phase of Three Phase Project Lasting Through 2020

KUB and its contractor, Hurst Excavating, are scheduled to begin construction activity next Tuesday, February 6, on Phase 1 of a project to rehabilitate five miles of wastewater pipe and manholes in the Sequoyah Hills area.

Excavation will begin in the Scenic Drive area near the Kingston Pike intersection. Hurst crews will progress south on Scenic Drive and Southgate Road. Phase 1 is expected to last approximately one year.

Phases two and three will follow, with work in all areas scheduled for completion by 2020. Final paving and street restoration is projected for fall 2021.

Road, lane, and sidewalk closures will be required throughout this project to facilitate safe access for equipment and workers. KUB will coordinate all closures and detours with the City of Knoxville. Alternate access will be provided for businesses and parking facilities. KUB and Hurst Excavating will also coordinate construction schedules to minimize the impact on special events in the area.

Construction methods will include open-cut replacement, as well as trenchless construction methods. Weekday work hours will be limited to generally daylight hours; however, some night and weekend work may be required to meet project milestone dates.

Construction Set to Begin Next Week on South Knox Natural Gas Project

KUB and its contractor, Cleary Construction, are scheduled to begin construction activity next week on a project to install 5,000 feet of natural gas main between Chapman Highway and Tipton Station Road in South Knox County. 

The general sequence of construction will involve vegetation clearing and site preparation in the utility right-of-way, by excavation and pipe installation, and final right-of-way restoration and stabilization.

Also as part of this project, contractor Cenergy, LLC, will construct a natural gas gate station at 304 Tipton Station Road. Gate station work is set to begin in May 2018. Final overall completion of this project is scheduled for August 2018.

This project will require temporary road closures on sections of Tipton Station Road, Henry Haynes Road, West Marine Road, and Mountain Grove Drive for natural gas main crossings over the course of the project. KUB will issue traffic advisories and communicate via social media ahead of those road closures.
