Sequoyah Hills Wastewater Project

July 27, 2018 UPDATE – Hurst Excavating continued open-cut trench work along Wilani Road this past week. Due to the depth of excavation in this area, Wilani Road will remain closed continuously to through traffic between Taliluna Avenue and Southgate Road through August 3. Access will be maintained to driveways on Wilani Road. Pipe-bursting crews will continue work along Arrowhead Trail, up to Lyons View Pike, through August 1, with restoration beginning the following day. Additional crews will be on Alta Vista, between Blows Ferry and Arrowhead Trail. Hiawatha drive will also be closed Wednesday, August 1 through Friday, August 10, between Noelton Drive and Towanda Trail. NOTES: KUB and Hurst Excavating have noticed that grass recently planted as part of yard restoration has started to turn brown due to hot, dry weather. Those areas will be readdressed by the contractor as temperatures decrease during the fall growing season. 

Depot Avenue Water Main Project

July 27, 2018 UPDATE – Garney Construction crews continued work on Williams Street between W. Magnolia Avenue and W. Depot Avenue, and also on W. Depot Avenue. The newly installed line on W. Depot will be tested next week. While this is occurring, the crew will move to E. Summit Hill Drive at Patton Street. Both westbound lanes of E. Summit Hill Drive will be closed at Patton Street from 7 a.m., Monday, July 30, through 5 p.m., Friday, August 3. Westbound traffic will be detoured to Hill Avenue, Howard Baker Jr. Boulevard, and Hall of Fame Drive, and other alternate routes include Marking Luther King, Jr., Avenue, McCalla Avenue, E. Jackson Avenue, and N. Central Street. Additionally, KUB crews will close Ogden Street between W. Fifth Avenue and The Mews Way from 6 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 28. As a reminder, W. Depot Avenue between Williams Street and N. Central Street and between N. Central and Morgan Street remains closed through August 10. A closure of this intersection for work will be announced at a later date.  


(Downtown Knoxville) Ogden Street Road Closure [July 28] – KUB crews will close Ogden Street between W. Magnolia Avenue and Mews Way from 6 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday, July 28, as work is performed on the water distribution system in the area. Alternate routes include W. Magnolia Avenue, W. Depot Street, N. Central Street, and Williams Street. Access to local businesses will be maintained, and flaggers and signs will be on site to assist with traffic control.

(Downtown Knoxville) East Summit Hill Drive Lane Closure [July 30 – August 3] – KUB contract crews will close both westbound lanes of E. Summit Hill drive at Patton Street from 7 a.m., Monday, July 30, through 5 p.m., Friday, August 3, as work is performed on the water distribution system in the area. Depot Avenue from 7 a.m., Monday, July 30, through 6 p.m., Friday, August 3, as work is performed on the water distribution system in the area. Alternate routes include N. Gay Street, W. Fifth Avenue, N. Central Street, and Ogden Street. Access to local businesses will be maintained, and flaggers and barricades will be on site to assist with traffic control.


South Knox Natural Gas Project


July 27, 2018 UPDATE Pipeline Installation/Testing: Cleary Construction crews continued restoration work along the pipeline installation route in off-road easements. No road closures are scheduled for next week; however, the righthand turn lane on Chapman Highway (between the IHOP/CVS entrance and Mountain Grove Road) will remain closed through August 3, as listed on the map. Work will continue in the Chapman Highway area as the contractor prepares to make the final tie-in for the new pipeline. Gate Station: Blount Excavating crews continued site clearing and grading work in preparation for construction of the new natural gas gate station located at 304 Tipton Station Road. Periodic temporary lane closures may be needed in this area of Tipton Station Road as construction equipment and materials are unloaded.

West Hills Natural Gas Project


July 27, 2018 UPDATE ZONE 2: KUB contractor Classic City Mechanical worked in the 8100-block of Corteland Drive this week. They will work in the 8200 block of Chesterfield Drive and the 8300-block of Bennington Drive next week. ZONE 3: Crews from KUB Underground Construction completed all work in Zone 3 as of Friday, July 20. Crews from this area will shift to Zone 4 next week. ZONE 4: East Tennessee Pipeline crews worked in the 200-block of Buckingham Drive this week and the 7400-block of Bennington Drive, as well as Shadycrest Drive. Next week, they will continue work in the 7400-block of Bennington Drive as well as on Bennington Circle and Shadycrest Drive. KUB has added 3,000 feet of steel main replacement on Dorchester Drive and Newcastle Road to the scope of work in Zone 4. Construction is scheduled to begin the week of August 6. Customers in this area will be notified by mail next week, prior the start of construction activity.

Access will be maintained to driveways on Wilani Road. Subcontractor paving and restoration crews will continue work in the Calumet Drive area next week. Pipe-bursting crews will continue work along Arrowhead Trail, up to Lyons View Pike. This past week, pipe-lining crews closed the eastbound lane of Kingston Pike between Noelton Drive and Towanda Trail from July 18-20. All lanes of Kingston Pike will reopen to normal traffic flow beginning this weekend. Lining crews also closed one lane on Scenic Drive on Monday, July 16. Next Monday, July 23, crews are scheduled to work in an off-road easement near Kingston Park Drive. NOTES: KUB and Hurst Excavating have noticed that grass recently planted as part of yard restoration has started to turn brown due to hot, dry weather. As indicated on this week’s map, the City of Knoxville is currently working on the stormwater system on Noelton Drive and Hiawatha Drive. This is not part of KUB’s work in the area. Depot Avenue Water Main Project

July 20, 2018 UPDATE – Garney Construction crews completed the tie-in to connect the 16-inch water main with the 36-inch water main at the intersection of W. Fifth Avenue and Williams Street. Installation of the 36-inch water main has been completed on Williams Street between W. Fifth Avenue through the W. Magnolia Avenue intersection. This section of road has been reopened to normal traffic flow, but it will be closed again in the coming weeks for paving and restoration. Pipe installation crews will continue work on Williams Street between W. Magnolia Avenue and W. Depot Avenue. The section of W. Depot Avenue between Williams Street and N. Central Street will remain closed to through traffic through early August as a second Garney Construction crew installs an 8-inch water line in this area. Installation of the 8-inch line is scheduled to begin on E. Depot Avenue on July 25. The N. Central Street intersection will remain open. Temporary adjustments to the traffic control plans may be made as the contractor works with area businesses to accommodate special events. 

Additionally, KUB crews will close Ogden Street between W. Fifth Avenue and The Mews Way from 6 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 21.

WEST HILLS GAS July 20, 2018 UPDATE –  ZONE 2: KUB contractor Classic City Mechanical worked in the 8300-block of Bennington Drive this week. July 18, 2018 UPDATE – In order to accommodate area events, Garney Construction crews will reopen a section of W. Depot Avenue at N. Central Street. Crews will move to W. Fifth Avenue as indicated by the below traffic advisory. Another project update will be provided later this week.

Gay Street and Williams Street from 7 a.m., Thursday, July 19, through 6 p.m., Friday, July 20, as work is performed on the water distribution system in the area. The westbound lane will remain open and be used to alternate traffic through the work zone. Access to local businesses will be maintained, and flaggers and barricades will be on site to assist with traffic control.

West Hills Natural Gas Project

July 13, 2018 UPDATE –  ZONE 2: KUB contractor Classic City Mechanical worked in the 8100 and 8200-blocks of Bennington Drive this week. They will return to the same area next week while also completing tie-ins at the intersection of Bennington Drive and Corteland Drive. ZONE 3: Crews from KUB Underground Construction and East Tennessee Pipeline worked the 500-block of Broome Road again this week. Next week crews will work on Broome Road at Kempton Lane and Westborough Road. ZONE 4: Crews bored in the new natural gas main on Downing Drive and Shadycrest Drive this week, and they will continue work in the same area next week. Buckingham Drive: Crews will begin installation of 450 feet of natural gas main on Buckingham Drive, between Vanosdale Road and Portsmouth Road, next week. Construction is expected to last through early August in this area. Motorists are advised to expect temporary lane closures and possible delays on Buckingham Drive.

Testing activities will be focused in the Tipton Station Road and Chapman Highway areas. Gate Station: Blount Excavating crews continued site clearing and grading work in preparation for construction of the new natural gas gate station located at 304 Tipton Station Road. Periodic temporary lane closures may be needed in this area of Tipton Station Road as construction equipment and materials are unloaded. 

Depot Avenue Water Main Project

July 13, 2018 UPDATE – Garney Construction and subcontractor crews completed paving work on the section of W. Fifth Avenue between N. Broadway and Williams Street on Thursday. W. Fifth Avenue has been reopened to normal traffic flow. The contractor will have to close W. Fifth Avenue at the Williams Street intersection for a brief period next week for paving. KUB will issue a notice prior to that closure. Crews continued installation of the 36-inch main along Williams Street between W. Fifth Avenue and progressing south toward W. Magnolia Avenue. Barring weather or construction delays, Garney plans to close Williams Street at W. Magnolia Avenue on Monday, July 16, and Tuesday, July 17, to install the 36-inch main across the intersection. Work will continue toward Depot Avenue next week. Garney Construction will also mobilize a second pipeline installation crew next Monday, July 16, to start laying an 8-inch water main along Depot Avenue, between Williams Street and N. Central Street. This section of Depot Avenue will be closed to through traffic for the next four weeks; however, access to businesses will be maintained. 


(Downtown Knoxville) Williams Street Road Closure [July 16-27] – KUB contract crews will close Williams Street between W. Magnolia Avenue and W. Depot Avenue from 7 a.m., Monday, July 16, through 6 p.m., Friday, July 27, as work is performed on the water distribution system in the area. Alternate routes include N. Gay Street, W. Fifth Avenue, N. Central Street, and Ogden Street. Access to local businesses will be maintained, and flaggers and barricades will be on site to assist with traffic control.

(Sequoyah Hills Area) Kingston Pike Lane Closure [July 18-20] – KUB contract crews will close a short section of the inside, eastbound lane of Kingston Pike between Anteelah Trail and Noelton Drive daily, Monday – Friday, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Wednesday, July 18, through Friday, July 20, as work is performed on the wastewater distribution system in the in the area. The curbside, eastbound lane will remain open during this time, as will both westbound lanes. Appropriate signs and channeling devices will be on site to assist with traffic control.

Paving and restoration crews will work in this area next week. Pipe-bursting crews will continue work along Arrowhead Trail, up to Lyons View Pike. Driveway repairs will also continue at the south end of Mellen Drive. NOTES: As indicated on this week’s map, the City of Knoxville is currently working on the stormwater system on Noelton Drive and Hiawatha Drive. This is not part of KUB’s work in the area. (Sequoyah Hills) Sequoyah Hills Area Road Closures [Extended, July 9-13] – KUB contract crews will implement the below road closures as needed daily, Monday-Friday, from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., July 9-13, as work continues on the wastewater collection system in the area:
·         Arrowhead Trail between Blows Ferry Road and Lyons View Pike
·         Arrowhead Trail between Blows Ferry Road and Dogwood Lane
·         Blows Ferry Road between Arrowhead Trail and Calumet Drive

Reminder that Wilani Road between Southgate Road and Taliluna Avenue will remain closed continuously through July 13 due to extensive excavation. Access to area homes will be maintained, and flaggers and signs will be on site to assist with traffic control. Roadways will be re-opened outside of work hours.  Follow-up advisories will be issued as necessary.

Depot Avenue Water Main Project

July 6, 2018 UPDATE – Garney Construction and subcontractor crews completed installation of the 36-inch water main on the section of W. Fifth Avenue between N. Broadway and Williams Street. This section of W. Fifth Avenue will remain closed next Monday and Tuesday, July 9 and 10, for paving and curb restoration. W. Fifth Avenue is expected to reopen to normal traffic flow on Wednesday, July 11. Alternate routes around the intersection closure include N. Broadway, Emory Place, King Street, S. Central Street, W. Depot Avenue, and Cooper Street. Crews began installation of the 36-inch main along Williams Street between W. Fifth Avenue and progressing south toward W. Magnolia Avenue on Monday, July 2. Work will continue on Williams Street next week. The W. Magnolia Avenue intersection remains open.

Periodic temporary lane closures may be needed in this area of Tipton Station Road as construction equipment and materials are unloaded. July 6, 2018 UPDATE –  ZONE 2: KUB contractor Classic City Mechanical did not work on site this week. Crews will resume work next week in the 8200-block of Bennington Drive next week. ZONE 3: Crews from KUB Underground Construction and East Tennessee Pipeline worked the 500-block of Broome Road this week, and they will return to that same area again next week. ZONE 4: Crews bored in the new natural gas main on Rockingham Drive and Downing Drive this week. Next week, they will move to Shadycrest Drive and the 7400-block of Bennington Drive. Work Zone Added – Buckingham Drive: KUB has added to the scope of work in the West Hills area with plans to install 450 feet of natural gas main on Buckingham Drive, between Vanosdale Road and Portsmouth Road. Construction is expected to begin in this area in mid-July and last through early August. There are no planned road or lane closures anticipated at this time for Buckingham Road; however, motorists are advised to expect possible delays and proceed with caution through the work zone.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY 

(West Knoxville) Scenic Drive Lane Closure [July 5] – KUB crews will reduce a short section of Scenic Drive to one alternating lane of traffic between Bluff View Road and Cedarhill Road from 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m., Thursday, July 5, as work is performed on the natural gas distribution system in the area. The southbound lane will be closed while the northbound lane remains open and is used to alternate traffic through the work zone. Access to local businesses and area homes will be maintained, and flaggers and signs will be on site to assist with traffic control.
