West Hills Natural Gas Project

March 30, 2018 UPDATE – KUB Underground construction crews continued work on Bathurst Road and the 7900, 8000, and 8400-blocks of Corteland Drive, Carrington Drive, and the 900-block of Marlboro Road this past week. Crews will work in the 7900-8000 Corteland Drive, 700-900 Marlboro Road, and 800-900 Carrington Drive areas next week.

Sequoyah Hills Wastewater Project

March 30, 2018 UPDATE – Hurst Excavating subcontractor crews continued to rehabilitate wastewater pipes, customer lines, and manholes in sections of Southgate Road (between Sequoyah Avenue and Wilani Road) and Sequoyah Avenue (between Agawela Avenue and Beacon Hill Lane). Crews rehabilitated a total of 561 feet of wastewater main, connected seven customer service laterals, and set one manhole in this area. Restoration work also continued in the off-road easements along back and side property lines between Scenic Drive and Valencia Road (parallel to Alta Vista Way). Work Zone Shift Update: Paving and restoration crews will continue work on the streets mentioned above through April 6, and pipe installation crews will begin work on the section of Southgate Road between Taliluna Avenue and Cherokee Boulevard. Crews will also work on the section of Wilani Road between Southgate Road and Taliluna Avenue. These sections of Southgate Road and Taliluna Avenue will be closed to through traffic weekdays from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. through April 27. Access will be maintained to driveways in these areas, and all roads will reopen to traffic outside of work hours. Crews will also work to rehabilitate sections of wastewater main and manholes in off-road back and side property easements in the area south of Kingston Park Drive next week. No work will be performed on Cherokee Boulevard through the end of April, while the Dogwood Arts Festival Trails and Gardens are open. See attached map for current work zones.

Depot Avenue Water Line Project

March 30, 2018 UPDATE – Garney Construction pipe installation crews shifted work zones to the section of W. Fifth Avenue between Cooper Street and N. Broadway. This section of road will remain closed through mid-April as a 12-inch main is installed in the area. The contractor also closed a two-block section of Morgan Street between E. Depot Avenue and E. Jackson Avenue to set up boring equipment for pipe installation under railroad tracks in this area. This section of Morgan Street will be closed through the end of April 2018. Paving crews finished restoration work on Van Street and the area under the W. Fifth Avenue bridge where crews crossed Second Creek with a section of 36-inch main. Boring crews continued to work on installation of sections of pipe under the railroad tracks in this same area beneath the bridge. Crews will continue to work on W. Fifth Avenue next week, progressing toward the N. Broadway intersection. KUB and Garney Construction will communicate details related to the intersection closure in advance. 

S. Knox Natural Gas Project

March 30, 2018 UPDATE – Pipeline installation continues in the off-road areas between Henry Haynes Road and Tipton Station Road. No long-term road closures are scheduled for next week; however, there may be temporary traffic delays on area roads as trucks with trailers transport large sections of pipe from the contractor laydown area at Mountain Grove Road to the project right-of-way. KUB will communicate as details are finalized in advance of all remaining road closures.

S. Knox Natural Gas Project

March 28, 2018 UPDATE – Contract crews will return tomorrow to perform temporary roadway restoration, including backfilling and temporary paving at 124 Henry Haynes Road. Henry Haynes Road will be closed as indicated below for the restoration work. 
In the coming weeks, the contractor will return to this area to complete work, and notices will be issued prior to the work occurring. When all work is completed, permanent roadway restoration work will be performed. Work on other parts of the project will continue as scheduled. 

(South Knoxville) Road Closure – Henry Haynes Road [March 29] – KUB contract crews will implement a closure of a short section of Henry Haynes Road between Chapman Highway and Babs Road from 7 a.m. - 5 p.m., on Thursday, March 29, as work is performed on the natural gas distribution system in the area. Alternate routes include W. Marine Road, Babs Road, and Tipton Station Road, and local traffic access will be maintained. Appropriate signage and flaggers will be on site to assist with traffic control. Follow-up advisories will be issued as necessary.

Depot Avenue Water Line Project

March 23, 2018 UPDATE – Garney Construction crews completed installation of the 36-inch water main across Second Creek, beneath the W. Fifth Avenue bridge, this week. Crews also continued to work on the bore to install sections of pipe under the railroad tracks in this same area beneath the bridge. Pipe installation has been completed on Van Street; however, a short section of road will remain closed through the middle of next week for roadway restoration. KUB work zones in this area will not interfere with the Knoxville Marathon this weekend. Work Zone Shift Update: Next week, crews will close the section of W. Fifth Avenue between Cooper Street and N. Broadway to through traffic for prep work and installation of a section of 12-inch water main. This section of W. Fifth Avenue will remain closed through mid-April. Crews will also close a two-block section of Morgan Street between E. Depot Avenue and E. Jackson Avenue next week as boring equipment is set up for pipe installation under railroad tracks in this area. This section of Morgan Street will be closed through the end of April 2018.


(North Knoxville) W. Fifth Avenue Road Closure [March 26 – Mid-April] – KUB contract crews will close a short section of W. Fifth Avenue between Cooper Street and N. Broadway from 7 a.m., March 26, through mid-April as work is performed on the water distribution system in the area. Alternate routes include Cooper Street and N. Broadway. Access to local businesses will be maintained, and flaggers and signs will be on site to assist with traffic control.

(North Knoxville) Morgan Street Road Closure [March 26 – April 30] – KUB contract crews will close a two-block section of Morgan Street between E. Depot Avenue and E. Jackson Avenue from 7 a.m., March 26, through April 30, as work is performed on the water distribution system in the area. Alternate routes include N. Central Street and Hall of Fame Drive.

Sequoyah Hills Wastewater Project

March 23, 2018 UPDATE – Hurst Excavating subcontractor crews continued to rehabilitate wastewater pipes, customer lines, and manholes in sections of Southgate Road (between Sequoyah Avenue and Wilani Road) and Sequoyah Avenue (between Agawela Avenue and Beacon Hill Lane). Crews rehabilitated a total of 475 feet of wastewater main, connected eight customer service laterals, and set two manholes in this area. Restoration work also continued in the off-road easements along back and side property lines between Scenic Drive and Valencia Road (parallel to Alta Vista Way). Work Zone Shift Update: In addition to continuing work on the streets mentioned above, crews will also begin work on a short section of Taliluna Avenue, just west of the Southgate Road intersection. All sections of roads mentioned will be closed to through traffic weekdays from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Access will be maintained to driveways in these areas, and all roads will reopen to traffic outside of work hours. Crews will also work to rehabilitate sections of wastewater main and manholes in off-road back and side property easements in the area between Blows Ferry Road and the Tennessee River next week. KUB work zones in the Sequoyah Hills area will not interfere with the Knoxville Marathon this weekend. See attached map for current work zones.

(Sequoyah Hills) Sequoyah Hills Area Road Closures [March 26 – April 13] – KUB contract crews will implement a closure of the below sections of roadways in Sequoyah Hills from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily, Monday-Friday, starting Monday, March 26, through Friday, April 13, as work continues on the wastewater collection system in the area:


  • Southgate Road between Sequoyah Avenue and Wilani Road
  • Sequoya Avenue between Beacon Hill Lane and Agawela Avenue



Alternate routes include Keowee Avenue, Agawela Avenue, Cherokee Boulevard, Lakeland Drive, and Taliluna Avenue, with local traffic access only maintained for residents. The roadway will be reopened after hours and on weekends. Appropriate signage and flaggers will be on site to assist with traffic control. Follow-up advisories will be issued as necessary.

West Hills Natural Gas Project

March 23, 2018 UPDATE – KUB Underground construction crews continued work on Ainsworth Drive, Bathurst Road, Corteland Drive, and Sheffield Drive this past week. Crews will work in the 7900 block of Corteland Drive, Marlboro Road, Carrington Drive, Ainsworth Drive and Bathurst Road next week.

South Knox Natural Gas Project

March 23, 2018 UPDATE – Work on the pipeline road crossing at 124 Henry Haynes Road has been suspended temporarily. Traffic rated steel plates have been placed over the excavation site and the road is reopened to traffic as of Friday, March 23. Follow up notices will be issued prior to crews returning to work in this area. Pipeline installation will continue in the off-road areas between Henry Haynes Road and Tipton Station Road next week. No long-term road closures are scheduled for this week; however, there may be temporary traffic delays on area roads as trucks with trailers transport large sections of pipe from the contractor laydown area at Mountain Grove Road to the project right-of-way. Additional pipeline road crossings will be required at Mountain Grove Road and W. Marine Road in the coming weeks. KUB will communicate as details are finalized in advance of those closures.

South Knox Natural Gas Project

March 16, 2018 UPDATE – Cleary Construction crews completed installation of the first section of natural gas main with a road crossing near 304 Tipton Station Road this past week. Pipeline installation will continue in the off-road areas near this section of Tipton Station Road early next week. Work Zone Shift Update: Beginning at 7 a.m., Tuesday, March 20, and lasting through 6 p.m., Friday, March 23, crews are scheduled to move to the area around 124 Henry Haynes Road for another pipeline installation road crossing. This section of Henry Haynes Road will be closed to through traffic continuously during the dates and times listed above. Alternate routes around the work zone include Tipton Station Road, Henry Haynes Road, Babs Road, W. Marine Road, and Chapman Highway. Area residents were notified by mail about the road closure, and a traffic advisory will be issued to local media outlets early next week.

(South Knoxville) Road Closure – Henry Haynes Road [March 20-23] – KUB contract crews will implement a closure of a short section of Henry Haynes Road between Chapman Highway and Babs Road from 7 a.m., Tuesday, March 20, through 5 p.m., Friday, March 23, as work is performed on the natural gas distribution system in the area. Alternate routes include W. Marine Road, Babs Road, and Tipton Station Road, and local traffic access will be maintained. Appropriate signage and flaggers will be on site to assist with traffic control. Follow-up advisories will be issued as necessary.

Depot Avenue Waterline Project

March 16, 2018 UPDATE – Garney Construction crews completed installation of the 36-inch water main on Van Street this week. The road closure will remain in effect on Van Street next week as paving and restoration crews work in the area. Contractor construction crews will move to the area beneath the W. Fifth Avenue bridge (to the west of Cooper Street) as they cross under Second Creek with the 36-inch main. Crews also continue to work on the bore to install sections of pipe under the railroad tracks in this same area beneath the bridge. Upon completion of the Second Creek crossing, plans are to move to W. Fifth Avenue (between Cooper Street and N. Broadway) in late March to begin saw cutting asphalt in preparation for construction in that area. Additional information about the scope of work and traffic impacts on W. Fifth Avenue will be communicated as details are finalized.

Sequoyah Hills Wastewater Project

March 16, 2018 UPDATE – Hurst Excavating subcontractor crews continued to rehabilitate wastewater pipes, customer lines, and manholes in the section of Southgate Drive between Sagwa Drive and Sequoyah Avenue and along Keowee Avenue (between Agawela Avenue and Southgate Road). Crews rehabilitated a total of 405 feet of wastewater main, connected eight customer service laterals, and set three manholes in this area. Restoration work also continued in the off-road easements along back and side property lines between Scenic Drive and Valencia Road (parallel to Alta Vista Way). 

Work Zone Shift Update: Next week, crews will continue moving south, setting up construction and road closure zones on Southgate Road (between Sequoyah Avenue and Wilani Road), and along Sequoyah Avenue (between Agawela Avenue and Beacon Hill Lane). These sections of Southgate Road and Sequoyah Avenue will be closed to through traffic weekdays from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Access will be maintained to driveways in these areas, and both roads will reopen to traffic outside of work hours. Crews will also work to rehabilitate sections of wastewater main and manholes in off-road back and side property easements in the Kingston Park Drive and Towanda Trail areas. (West Knoxville) Kingston Pike Lane Closure [March 19] – KUB crews will close a short section of the curbside, westbound lane of Kingston Pike between Cherokee Boulevard and E. Hillvale Turn from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Monday, March 19, as work is performed on the electric distribution system in the area. One westbound lane and both eastbound lanes will remain open during this time. Access to local driveways will be maintained, and flaggers and signs will be on site to assist with traffic control. 

West Hills Natural Gas Project

March 16, 2018 UPDATE – KUB Underground construction crews continued work on Ainsworth Drive, Corteland Drive and Sheffield Drive this past week. Crews will work in the 7900 and 8400 blocks of Corteland Drive, the 7800 block of Sheffield Drive, and along Ainsworth Drive and Bathurst Road next week.

March 9, 2018 UPDATE – Garney Construction crews continued installation of the 36-inch water main along Van Street this week. The road closure remains in effect in this area. Restoration crews also finished roadway and sidewalk repairs on the section of Blackstock Avenue between Oak Avenue and Van Street. Van Street remains closed to through traffic between Blackstock Avenue and W. Fifth Avenue, but access to businesses and driveways remains open. Crews also continue to work on the bore to install a section of pipe under Second Creek. Equipment for this work is set up off the roadway beneath the W. Fifth Avenue bridge to the west of Cooper Street. In the next several weeks, crews will also begin construction prep work to cross under Second Creek with pipe and along W. Fifth Avenue (between Cooper Street and N. Broadway). Information about work in those areas will be communicated as details are finalized.

Sequoyah Hills Wastewater Project

March 9, 2018 UPDATE – Hurst Excavating subcontractor crews continued to rehabilitate wastewater pipes, customer lines, and manholes in the 700 block of Scenic Drive and in the off-road easements along back and side property lines between Scenic Drive and Valencia Road (parallel to Alta Vista Way). Work Zone Shift Update: Next week, crews will take advantage of Knox County Schools being on spring break as they shift the work zone to the area of Southgate Drive in front of Sequoyah Elementary School and the Sequoyah Branch Library (between Sagwa Drive and Sequoyah Avenue). Crews will also work along Keowee Avenue, between Southgate Road and Agawela Avenue. Both above-mentioned sections of Southgate Drive and Keowee Avenue will be closed to through traffic weekdays from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Access will be maintained to the school (via Sagwa Drive), library, and driveways in these areas, and both roads will reopen to traffic outside of work hours. Crews will also continue manhole installation and restoration work in the off-road easements between Scenic Drive and Valencia Road.

March 9, 2018 UPDATE – Contractor Cleary Construction is set to begin installation of the natural gas main next week, beginning with a road crossing near 304 Tipton Station Road. To facilitate safe access for equipment and workers, Cleary Construction will close a short section of Tipton Station Road between Rogers Lane and Jonesboro Drive to through traffic from 7 a.m., Tuesday, March 13, and lasting until 6 p.m., Friday, March 16. Alternate routes around the work zone include Henry Haynes Road, Pickens Gap Road, Chapman Highway, and W. Hendron Chapel Road. Area residents were notified by mail about the road closure, and a traffic advisory will be issued to local media outlets early next week.

West Hills Natural Gas Project

March 9, 2018 UPDATE – KUB Underground construction crews continued work on Carrington Road and Marlboro Drive this past week. Two additional crews will work in the 7700-7800 block of Bennington Drive, the 7800-7900 block Bennington Drive, and the 7800-7900 block of Sheffield Drive to connect sections of installed main next week. The boring rig crew will continue work on Ainsworth Drive, Bathurst Road, and Corteland Drive in Zone 3 next week.

Sequoyah Hills Wastewater Project

March 2, 2018 UPDATE – Hurst Excavating subcontractor crews worked in the 700 block of Scenic Drive this week to replace one manhole, connect one customer service lateral, and test recently-installed mains and manholes. Next week, crews will rehabilitate the section of wastewater main located in the off-road easements along back and side property lines between Scenic Drive and Valencia Road (parallel to Alta Vista Way). Crews will continue work to replace a manhole in the 700 block of Scenic Drive. Daily road closures will also remain in effect on this section of Scenic Drive next week as paving and roadway restoration work in the area. Later this month, crews will shift the work zone to the area of Southgate Drive between Sagwa Drive and Sequoyah Avenue. Detailed information on traffic impacts and updated maps will be posted on this blog prior to the start of work in that area.

The road closure on Blackstock Avenue remains in effect between Oak Avenue and Van Street as paving and roadway restoration continues through next week. Construction crews have shifted the work zone north to Van Street, between Blackstock Avenue and W. Fifth Avenue. This section of Van Street will be closed to through traffic, but access will be maintained to businesses. Construction will continue in this area through mid-March. Crews also continue to work on the bore to install a section of pipe under Second Creek. Equipment for this work is set up off the roadway beneath the W. Fifth Avenue bridge to the west of Cooper Street. 

South Knox Natural Gas Project

March 2, 2018 UPDATE – Contractor Cleary Construction continued working on clearing the right-of-way in the areas noted on the project map. Crews also continued to mobilize equipment and materials to the jobsite. Next week, contractor crews will begin connecting sections of pipe above ground and staging pipe along the cleared sections of right-of-way in preparation for the start of excavation. Site clearing and mobilization will continue through early March. The first pipeline installation crossing of the roadway at 304 Tipton Station Road is currently scheduled for mid-March. Detailed information on traffic impacts and updated maps will be posted on this blog prior to the start of work in that area.
