West Hills Area Natural Gas Project

January 26, 2018 West Hills Natural Gas Main Replacement Project Update –KUB Underground Construction crews are scheduled to resume work in the area on Monday, January 29. Tie-up crews will work in the 7700 block of Bennington Drive and the 7800 block of Corteland Drive to connect existing customer service lines over to the new main.

The boring crew is scheduled to resume installation of new sections of natural gas main in the 7900 block of Corteland Drive next week.

Depot Avenue Water Line Project

January 26, 2018 Depot Avenue Area Water Main Installation Project Update – KUB contractor Garney Construction completed installation of the 36-inch water main on the section of Blackstock Avenue between the Western Avenue overpass and Hannah Avenue this week. Weather permitting, paving crews will be working on roadway surface restoration in that area next week.

Garney crews continued to progress north this week, beginning installation of the 36-inch main on the section of Blackstock Avenue between Hannah Avenue and Oak Avenue. Crews and equipment will be in this area through mid-February.

In addition to ongoing water main installation on Blackstock Avenue, Garney crews will replace a section of wastewater main on Ramsey Street next week, starting at the Hannah Avenue intersection and progressing south. This work is expected to last through early February.

Crews also continued activity to bore a section of pipe under railroad tracks in the W. Fifth Avenue area. Work in this area is expected to last approximately two months.

(North Knoxville) Blackstock Avenue Road Closure [Extended, January 29 – February 5] – KUB contract crews will maintain a closure of a short section of Blackstock Avenue between the Western Avenue overpass and Hannah Street from 5 p.m., Monday, January 29, through 5 p.m., Monday, February 5, as work is performed on the water distribution system in the area. Alternate routes include Western Avenue, Broadway, and Oak Avenue. Access to local businesses will be maintained, and flaggers and signs will be on site to assist with traffic control.

Sequoyah Hills Wastewater Rehabilitation Project

January 19, 2018 UPDATE - Due to delays in the delivery of pipe materials, KUB and contractor Hurst Excavating have moved the construction start date for the Phase 1 area to the week of February 12. Pre-construction activity, including closed-circuit camera inspections and marking existing underground utility lines, will continue in this area in the meantime. Additional updates will follow prior to the start of construction.

West Hills Area Natural Gas Main Project

January 19, 2018 UPDATE - Due to extreme cold temperatures and snow, crews were unable to work in the area this past week. Weather permitting, crews are expected to resume work the week of January 29.

Depot Avenue Water Line Project

January 19, 2018 UPDATE - Garney Construction crews continued installation of the 36-inch water transmission main along the stretch of Blackstock Avenue between the Heins Street and Hannah Avenue intersections. Including installation of approximately 460 feet of pipe this week, the overall amount of water main installed for the project to date is approximately 540 feet.  As a reminder, due to ongoing excavation and the presence of equipment and materials, this section of Blackstock Avenue will remain closed through January 31 (including weekends). Access to businesses and parking lots will be maintained as crews continue work in this area.

Next week, Garney Construction will continue water main installation up to Hannah Avenue.  Once they have finished all work up to the Hannah Avenue intersection, the road closure will then shift to the section of Blackstock Avenue between Hannah Avenue and Oak Avenue. This section of Blackstock Avenue is expected to remain closed until mid-February. Additional information will follow as crews shift the work zone to this area. Crews will also replace approximately 140 feet of wastewater main and one manhole at the intersection of Blackstock Avenue and Hannah Avenue.

In addition to the work on Blackstock Avenue, the boring subcontractor contractor completed excavation of a large bore pit and related equipment in the area under the north side of the W. Fifth Avenue overpass. Crews are expected to work in this area through March 2018 with no impacts to traffic.

Depot Avenue Water Line Project

January 12, 2018 Depot Avenue Area Water Main Installation Project Update – KUB contractor Garney Construction has begun installation of the 36-inch water main in the Blackstock Avenue area.

Crews installed approximately 80 feet of pipe starting under the Western Avenue overpass and progressing north this past week. Another 60 feet stretch has been excavated, up to the Heins Street intersection, with plans to install pipe in that location next week.

Crews have also started pre-construction preparations and equipment set up to bore a section of pipe under railroad tracks in the W. Fifth Avenue area. Work in this area is expected to last approximately two months.

No work will be performed on Monday, January 15, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr., Day. The road closure on Blackstock Avenue between the Western Avenue overpass and Hannah Street will remain in place on Monday.

Weather permitting, crews will return to the project Tuesday, January 16.

Sequoyah Hills Area Wastewater Rehabilitation Project

January 5, 2018 UPDATE - KUB and its contractor, Hurst Excavating, are scheduled to begin pre-construction activity in the Phase 1 project area on Monday, January 8.

This work will include subcontractors conducting closed-circuit camera inspections of wastewater pipes and manholes. Workers will also be present in the area to identify and mark existing underground utility lines in construction zones with paint and/or flags.

Digging work is expected to begin on Monday, January 29, in the Scenic Drive area near the Kingston Pike intersection. Once construction excavation begins, work will progress south on Scenic Drive and Southgate Road. Phase 1 is expected to last approximately one year.
