Sequoyah Hills Wastewater Project

September 26, 2019 UPDATE – Construction crews will work in the following areas next week with intermittent road closures between 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.:
·         Bluff View Road between Southgate Road and Holloway Drive

Crews will also work on the following roads with intermittent lane closures between 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.:
·         Taliluna Avenue between Agawela Avenue and Southgate Road 
·         Kenesaw Avenue between Taliluna Avenue and Cherokee Boulevard
·         Agawela Avenue between Taliluna Avenue and Cherokee Boulevard

Crews will also work in the following off-road easements with minimal traffic impacts:
·         Easement between Sequoyah Avenue and Taliluna Avenue

Yard/Easement Restoration – Weather has had a major impact on yard/easement restoration efforts as continued hot temperatures and dry conditions have combined to prevent planted grass seed from growing. KUB’s contractor, Morgan Construction, and their subcontractors will revisit restoration areas in the coming weeks, once temperatures start to cool and rain is in the forecast.

Closed-circuit Television Inspection – Crews will continue to work throughout the Phase 2 area next week. Temporary lane closures will be implemented as needed when crews are present.

Sequoyah Park – Morgan Construction and their subcontractors continue to rehabilitate the existing wastewater main and manholes in Sequoyah Park. See the attached map showing current work corridors within the park. The park, all entrances and parking areas, and boat ramp remain open during this work. Morgan Construction is also maintaining a fenced area in the middle parking lot for equipment and materials storage. KUB has coordinated work in the park with City of Knoxville Parks and Recreation and the Kingston Pike Sequoyah Hills Association. Informational banners have been placed in the park entrances/parking areas to provide park visitors with details about the wastewater rehabilitation work. Updates on the progress of work in the park will be posted weekly and as needed on this blog site.

Natural Gas System Work – Crews have resumed natural gas inspection and maintenance work at various locations throughout Sequoyah Hills. This work may require short term traffic impacts in the immediate area where crews are working.

Kingston Pike Water Main Project

September 26, 2019KUB Underground Construction crews have finished installation and testing of the new water main on Kingston Pike between Homberg Drive and Westwood Road. Construction continues during overnight hours, Sunday through Thursday, as crews complete service line connections, fire hydrant installations, and tie-ins to existing water mains. Contractor crews are also paving recent work areas nightly working to finish road patches. TDOT requirements call for all traffic lanes to reopen by 6 a.m. each morning. The center turn lane will remain closed on this section of Kingston Pike for the duration of the project. Beginning the second week of October, crews will shift the work zone to Old Kingston Pike, S. Forest Boulevard, and Staub Street. Details on work in this area will be communicated as the schedule is finalized.

Fountain City Natural Gas Project

September 26, 2019 – Contractor Classic City Mechanical will work in the following areas next week:
  • Connecting sections of bored-in natural gas main along Grove Drive between Grove Villas Way to Mynatt Road
  • Potholing to locate existing buried utilities and boring in sections of new natural gas main on Grove Drive from Edonia Drive east to Gresham Road


Holston Hills Natural Gas Project

September 26, 2019 Update –Contractor East Tennessee Pipeline crews will work in the following areas next week:
·     Customer service line connections between 5400 and 5200 blocks on E. Sunset Road
·     Potholing to locate existing buried utility lines and boring in sections of new natural gas main from the 5600 block of Crestwood Drive to the Holston Hills Road intersection

Kingston Pike/Homberg Drive Water Main Project


September 20, 2019Construction began on Kingston Pike this past Sunday, September 15.  Crews are working overnight with TDOT issued work hours from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday evening through Friday morning. Construction progressed north across the east bound lanes of Kingston Pike then westward through the center turn lane from the intersection of Homberg Dr and Kingston Pike to the intersection of Westwood Rd. Crews will perform water sample testing over the weekend. Customer service lines, fire hydrants, and connecting to existing water mains will take place in the coming weeks. Paving crews are working to finish road patches on Homberg Drive, as well as repaving recent work areas in Kingston Pike, on a nightly basis as TDOT requirements call for all traffic lanes to reopen by 6 a.m. each morning. The center turn lane will remain closed on this section of Kingston Pike for the duration of the project.

Fountain City Natural Gas Project


September 20, 2019 – Contractor Classic City Mechanical will work in the following areas next week:
  • Potholing to locate existing buried utility lines and boring in new natural gas main on Grove Drive from Martha Berry Drive east to Edonia Drive
  • Tie new natural gas mains into existing mains on Grove Drive from Martha Berry Drive to Rifle Range Road

(Sequoyah Hills) Scenic Drive Road Closure [September 23] – KUB crews will close a short section of Scenic Drive between Blows Ferry Road and Choctaw Road to through traffic from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., on Monday, September 23, as work is performed on the wastewater collection system in the area. Alternate routes include Choctaw Road, Chickasaw Road, South Garden Road, and Navaho Road. Appropriate signage and flaggers will be on site to assist with traffic control. Follow-up advisories will be issued as necessary.

One eastbound and one westbound lane of traffic will be maintained at all times, with closed lanes reopening at 6 a.m. each morning. No work will occur overnight Friday and Saturday night. Flaggers and signs will be onsite to assist with traffic control.

Holston Hills Natural Gas Project


September 13, 2019 Update –Contractor East Tennessee Pipeline crews will directional bore to install new natural gas main from the 5500 block east to the 5800 block on Holston Hills Road. Crews will also bore across Holston Hills Road at Cliffside Lane and continue with installation of 225-feet of main on that street. Customer service line connections will be made between the 5900 and 5300 blocks on E. Sunset Drive.

Homberg Drive/Kingston Pike Water Main Project

HOMBERG DRIVE WATER MAIN REPLACEMENT – September 13, 2019 – All water main installation, service line connection, and paving/restoration has been completed on Homberg Drive, S. Mohican Street, and Whitaker Drive.

KINGSTON PIKE WATER MAIN REPLACEMENT – September 13, 2019 – Pre-construction work, including saw-cutting asphalt in preparation for digging, was completed overnight this past Wednesday and Thursday. KUB Underground Construction crews are scheduled to begin excavation work at the intersection of Homberg Drive and Kingston Pike at 8 p.m., Sunday, September 15. As a reminder, this work will be performed overnight from 8 p.m.—6 a.m. through mid-October. The center turn lane will be closed continuously for the duration of the project on the section of Kingston Pike between Westwood Road and Homberg Drive. Additional lane closures will be needed as work shifts to different areas on this section of Kingston Pike. One eastbound and one westbound lane of traffic will be maintained at all times, with closed lanes reopening at 6 a.m. each morning. No work will occur overnight Friday and Saturday night. Flaggers and signs will be onsite to assist with traffic control.

A boring crew will also work on Grove Drive, progressing toward Edonia Road.

Next week, crews will be performing potholing work to locate existing buried utility lines and boring in new sections of natural gas main between the 5500 block of Holston Hills Road and the Crestwood Drive intersection. Crews will also pothole and bore along Cliffside Lane, starting at the Holston Hills Road intersection
