Sequoyah Hills Wastewater Project

June 29, 2018 UPDATE – Hurst Excavating continued open-cut trench work along Wilani Road this week. Due to extensive excavation, Wilani Road will remain closed continuously to through traffic between Taliluna Avenue and Southgate Road through next week. Access will be maintained to driveways on Wilani Road. Subcontractor pipe-bursting crews also continued work in the vicinity of Calumet Drive and Blows Ferry Road. Pipe-bursting crews will continue work in those areas next week while also starting work on Arrowhead Trail. Restoration and paving work was completed near Shawnee Lane and Valencia Road. Driveway repairs will also continue on Mellen Drive. NOTES: Crews will not work on Wednesday, July 4, in observance of the Independence Day holiday. As indicated on this week’s map, the City of Knoxville is currently working on the stormwater system on Noelton Drive and Hiawatha Drive. This is not part of KUB’s work in the area. Please contact the City of Knoxville at 311 for more information about their work in this area. 

(Sequoyah Hills) Sequoyah Hills Area Road Closures [Extended, July 2-6] – KUB contract crews will implement the below road closures as needed daily, Monday-Friday, from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., July 2-6, as work continues on the wastewater collection system in the area:
·         Arrowhead Trail between Blows Ferry Road and Lyons View Pike
·         Arrowhead Trail between Blows Ferry Road and Dogwood Lane
·         Blows Ferry Road between Arrowhead Trail and Calumet Drive
Reminder that Wilani Road between Southgate Road and Taliluna Avenue will remain closed continuously through July 6 due to extensive excavation. Access to local businesses and area homes will be maintained, and flaggers and signs will be on site to assist with traffic control. Roadways will be re-opened outside of work hours.  Follow-up advisories will be issued as necessary. 

Depot Avenue Water Main Project

June 29, 2018 UPDATE – Garney Construction and subcontractor crews completed installation of the 36-inch water main on W. Fifth Avenue through the N. Gay Street intersection this week. This section of W. Fifth Avenue will remain closed through Wednesday, July 4, for paving and curb restoration. Alternate routes around the intersection closure include N. Broadway, Emory Place, King Street, S. Central Street, W. Depot Avenue, and Cooper Street. Crews will start installation of the 36-inch main along Williams Street between W. Fifth Avenue and W. Magnolia Avenue on Monday, July 2. The W. Magnolia Avenue intersection will remain open. The section of W. Fifth Avenue between Cooper Street and N. Broadway has been fully reopened to normal traffic flow. As indicated on this week’s traffic flow map, Garney Construction crews will work on Wednesday, July 4, and they will not work on Friday, July 6. Area businesses have been notified about this work schedule.


(Downtown Knoxville) Williams Street Road Closure [July 2-6] – KUB contract crews will close a short section of Williams Street between W. Fifth Avenue and Magnolia Avenue from 7 a.m., Monday, July 2, through 5 p.m. Friday, July 6, as work is performed on the water distribution system in the area. The intersection of W. Fifth Avenue and Williams Street will be closed, and local traffic should access Williams Street via N. Gay Street. Access to local businesses will be maintained, and flaggers and barricades will be on site to assist with traffic control.

West Hills Natural Gas Project


June 29, 2018 UPDATE –  ZONE 2: KUB contractor Classic City Mechanical worked in the 8200 block of Bennington Drive this week. Crews will continue to work between 8200 and 8300 blocks of Bennington Drive next week. Crews will also work in the 8200 block of Chesterfield Drive next week. ZONE 3: Crews from KUB Underground Construction and East Tennessee Pipeline worked the 500 and 600 blocks of Broome Road. Crews will work in that same area next week. Crews will also tie into the existing mains at both Westborough Road and Kempton Road next week. ZONE 4: Crews began work on Rockingham Drive and Downing Drive this week, and they will continue working in those same areas next week. NOTE: Crews will not work on Wednesday, July 4, in observance of the Independence Day holiday.


South Knox Natural Gas Project


June 29, 2018 UPDATE Pipeline Installation: Cleary Construction crews completed installation of the new natural gas main under the roadway on Mountain Grove Road (just west of the Smoky Grove Road intersection). No road closures are scheduled for next week; however, the righthand turn lane on Chapman Highway (between the IHOP/CVS entrance and Mountain Grove Road) will remain closed through August 3, as listed on the map. Next week, crews will work in the off-road easement between Mountain Grove Road and Chapman Highway. Restoration work will continue along the off-road easements between Mountain Grove Road and Tipton Station Road. Gate Station: Blount Excavation crews began mobilizing on the site of the new natural gas gate station located at 304 Tipton Station Road. Clearing and grading work will continue at this location for the next several weeks. Periodic temporary lane closures may be needed in this area of Tipton Station Road as construction equipment and materials are unloaded. NOTE: Crews will not work on Wednesday, July 4, in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

Depot Avenue Water Line Project

June 22, 2018 UPDATE – Garney Construction and subcontractor crews completed installation of the 36-inch water main on W. Fifth Avenue through the N. Broadway intersection this week. Paving and restoration work has been completed and the N. Broadway intersection has been reopened to normal traffic flow. Crews have shifted the work zone to the area between the N. Gay Street intersection and Williams Street. The N. Gay Street intersection will remain closed through next week. Alternate routes around the intersection closure include N. Broadway, Emory Place, King Street, S. Central Street, W. Depot Avenue, and Cooper Street.

Work will also continue in the off-road easement near Shawnee Lane through next week. Crews will also expand the work zone next week to include the area near the Arrowhead Trail and Blows Ferry Road intersection. Road closures will be necessary in this area, as well, to facilitate access for construction equipment.

(Sequoyah Hills) Sequoyah Hills Area Road Closures [June 25-29] – KUB contract crews will implement the below road closures daily, Monday-Friday, from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., June 25-29, as work continues on the wastewater collection system in the area:

South Knox Natural Gas Project


June 22, 2018 UPDATE – Cleary Construction crews completed installation of the new natural gas main under the roadway at W. Marine Road. That section of W. Marine Road, and the access road to the Food City store, are reopened to normal traffic flow. Next week, crews will continue installation of the new natural gas main in the easement on the west side of Smoky Grove Road. Additionally, crews will implement a full road closure on Mountain Grove Road (just west of the Smoky Grove Road intersection) starting at 7 a.m. Monday, June 25, and lasting through 5 p.m. Friday, June 29, to allow for pipeline installation under the roadway in this area. Cleary Construction will also close the southbound, righthand turn lane on Chapman Highway (between the IHOP/CVS entrance and Mountain Grove Road) starting Monday, June 25, and lasting through Friday, August 3. Off-road easement restoration will also continue between W. Marine Road and Tipton Station Road over the next several weeks. GATE STATION UPDATE: Beginning Thursday, June 28, KUB subcontractor Blount Excavation will begin site preparation work, including vegetation clearing and grading activities, in preparation for construction of the new natural gas gate station located at 304 Tipton Station Road. There are no current lane or road closures in association with this work; however, there will be an increase in heavy truck and equipment traffic in this area.

TRAFFIC ADVISORIES

(South Knoxville) Chapman Highway Continuous Lane Closure [June 25 – August 3] – KUB contract crews will close a short section of the southbound right turn lane of Chapman Highway beginning at IHOP/CVS to Mountain Grove Drive, from 7 a.m., Monday, June 25, through 5 p.m., Friday, August 3, as work is performed on the natural gas distribution system in the in the area. Both southbound lanes, the center turn lane, and both northbound lanes will remain open during this time and turn access to Mountain Grove Drive will be maintained. Access to local business will be maintained, and flaggers and signs will be on site to assist with traffic control.

(South Knoxville) Mountain Grove Drive Road Closure [June 25-29] – KUB contract crews will implement a road closure on Mountain Grove Drive between Majestic Grove Road and Chapman Highway from 7 a.m., Monday, June 25, through 5 p.m., Friday, June 29, as work is performed on the natural gas distribution system in the area. Alternate routes include W. Marine Road, W. Governor John Sevier Highway, and Majestic Grove Road. Flaggers and signs will be on site to assist with traffic control. Follow-up advisories will be issued as necessary. 

West Hills Natural Gas Project


June 22, 2018 UPDATE –  ZONE 2: KUB contractor Classic City Mechanical worked in the 8100 block of Bennington Drive this week. Crews will continue to work between 8117 through the 8300 block of Bennington Drive next week. ZONE 3: Crews from KUB Underground Construction and East Tennessee Pipeline have completed all customer service line connections in this zone except for remaining houses in the 500 and 600 blocks of Broome Road. Crews will work in that area next week. ZONE 4: This week, KUB mailed a summer 2018 project update to customers in all four construction zones to advise on the status of the overall project. Please see the attached updated information sheet and overall project map that was included in the mailing for more details. Among the information included in that update mailing was details on the start of pre-construction activities scheduled to begin in Zone 4 next week. Crews will begin work on Rockingham Drive and Downing Drive next Monday, June 25. 5,600 feet of natural gas main and 67 customer service line connections will be installed in this zone.

Depot Avenue Water Main Project

June 19, 2018 UPDATE – Garney Construction crews will shift the current work zone to include the section of W. Fifth Avenue between N. Broadway and the N. Gay Street intersection starting on Wednesday, June 20, and lasting through Friday, June 22. As part of this work zone shift, the N. Broadway intersection will reopen to normal traffic flow, and the N. Gay Street intersection will be closed to through traffic. Paving and curb restoration will continue in the section of W. Fifth Avenue between Queen Street and N. Broadway.

West Hills Natural Gas Project


June 14, 2018 UPDATE –  ZONE 2: KUB contractor Classic City Mechanical worked in the 400 block of N. Winston Road, the 8100 and 8300 blocks of Bennington Drive, and the 8200 block of Chesterfield Drive this week. Crews will continue to work in those same areas next week. ZONE 3: Crews from KUB Underground Construction and East Tennessee Pipeline worked in the 600 block of Broome Road this past week. The will work on the section of Broome Road between Corteland Drive and Chadwick Drive next week. Additionally, crews will work in the 8400 and 8500 blocks of Corteland Drive. ZONE 4: Pre-construction activities to locate existing underground utilities are expected to begin in late June 2018. In addition to information posted on this blog, customers in the area will be notified by mail prior to the start of those activities.

South Knox Natural Gas Project


June 14, 2018 UPDATE – Cleary Construction crews worked in off-road easements between Henry Haynes Road and West Marine Road, and in Mountain Grove Road area near Chapman Highway this week. Next week, the contractor will close the section of Weast Marine Road between Smoky Grove Road and 150 West Marine Road to install the section of natural gas pipeline underneath the roadway in this area. This road closure will be in place starting at 8 a.m., Monday, June 18, through 5 p.m., Thursday, June 21, weather permitting. Access to Food City from Smoky Grove Road will also be closed. Alternate routes include Henry Haynes Road, Babs Road, Mountain Grove Drive, and Chapman Highway. Flaggers and message boards will be on site to assist with traffic control. Restoration crews will also work in area south of West Marine Road, and construction prep crews will work in the area north of West Marine Road next week.

Crews will continue to work in this zone through June 22. The N. Gay Street intersection remains open. Next week, Garney Construction will have a crew working on a wastewater manhole in an off-road easement in the Blackstock Avenue area behind The International. There will be no traffic impacts related to this work. Work is expected to continue in this area through mid-June.

June 14, 2018 UPDATE – Hurst Excavating and its subcontractor pipe-bursting crews worked along Calumet Drive and in the off-road easements between Calumet Drive and Blows Ferry Road. Work will continue in this area next week. Crews are also scheduled to begin construction activities on Wilani Road next week. Wilani Road will be closed to through traffic daily between Taliluna Avenue and Southgate Road in association with this work. Off-road easement restoration work will continue near Towanda Trail/Noelton Drive and Shawnee Lane through next week, and driveway/paving restoration work is scheduled for the south end of Mellen Avenue and Valencia Road.

(West Knoxville) Kingston Pike Lane Closure [June 15] – KUB crews will close a short section of the curbside, westbound lane of Kingston Pike between Oakhurst Drive and Scenic Drive from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Friday, June 15, as work is performed on the electric distribution system in the in the area. One westbound lane and both eastbound lanes will remain open during this time. Access to local business will be maintained, and flaggers and signs will be on site to assist with traffic control. 


(Sequoyah Hills Area) Sequoyah Hills Area Road Closures [June 18 – July 6] – KUB contract crews will implement the below road closures as work continues on the wastewater collections system in the area:
  • Wilani Road between Taliluna Avenue and Southgate Road. Closed from 7 a.m., Monday, June 18, through 5 p.m., Friday, July 6. Local driveway access maintained.
  • Blows Ferry Drive between Calumet Drive and Alta Vista Way. Daily from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday, starting Monday, June 18, through Friday, June 22.
Alternate routes include Southgate Road, South Garden Road, Scenic Drive, Agawela Avenue, and Sequoyah Avenue. Appropriate signage and flaggers will be on site to assist with traffic control, and local traffic access will be maintained to area homes and businesses. No work will occur on Wednesday, July 4. Follow-up advisories will be issued as necessary.

West Hills Natural Gas Project

June 7, 2018 UPDATE –  ZONE 2: KUB contractor Classic City Mechanical installed the new natural gas main on Corteland Drive and Bennington Drive, and connected customer service lines to the new main on Chesterfield Drive. Next week, crews will work in the 400 block of N. Winston Road (no expected impacts to traffic flow), the 8100 and 8300 blocks of Bennington Drive, and the 8200 block of Chesterfield Drive. ZONE 3: Crews from KUB Underground Construction and East Tennessee Pipeline worked in the 600 block of Broome Road this past week, and they are scheduled to work in this same area again next week. Additionally, crews will work in the 8400 and 8500 blocks of Corteland Drive.

(West Knoxville) Road Closure – Broome Road [Revised, June 8-22] – KUB crews will implement a closure of Broome Road between Kempton Road and Chadwick Drive on the dates and times as indicated below as work is performed on the natural gas distribution system in the area:
·         Friday, June 8, and Monday, June 11: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. daily
·         Tuesday, June 12, through Friday, June 22: 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily, Monday-Friday
Appropriate signage and flaggers will be on site to assist with traffic control, and local traffic access will be maintained to area homes. Alternate routes include Middlebrook Pike, Broome Road, and N. Gallaher View Road, Chadwick Drive. The roadway will reopen after hours and on weekends. Follow-up advisories will be issued as necessary.   

South Knox Natural Gas Project

June 7, 2018 UPDATE – Cleary Construction crews completed all pipeline installation requiring road closures on Henry Haynes Road this past week. Crews will work in off-road easements between Henry Haynes Road and West Marine Road. Crews will also work in the Mountain Grove Road area near Chapman Highway next week. No road closures are scheduled for the week of June 11-15.

Sequoyah Hills Wastewater Project

June 7, 2018 UPDATE – Hurst Excavating and its subcontractors completed rehabilitation work on wastewater mains, manholes, and customer service lines in off-road easements between the north ends of Noelton Drive and Towanda Trail. Easement restoration work will continue in this area next week. Crews also completed pipeline and manhole rehabilitation in the off-road easements along back property lines between 1964 and 2028 Cherokee Boulevard. Manhole testing work was also completed in off-road easements at the south end of Blows Ferry Road. Paving and restoration work will continue on the south end of Mellen Road and Valencia Road next week. Pipe-bursting crews will begin work along Calumet Drive and in the off-road easements between Calumet Drive and Blows Ferry Road next week. Crews are also scheduled to begin pre-construction activities, including mobilization of materials and saw-cutting, on Wilani Road by the middle of next week. Once this work begins, Wilani Road will be closed to through traffic daily between Taliluna Avenue and Southgate Road. Details on work in this area will be communicated as they are finalized next week.

June 7, 2018 UPDATE – Garney Construction and subcontractor crews continued installation of the 36-inch water main on the section of W. Fifth Avenue between Cooper Street and N. Broadway. Both the Cooper Street and N. Broadway intersections remain open. Work is expected to continue in this area through mid-June.





Sunny days and lower humidity made for ideal working conditions as Garney Construction crews continued installation of the 36-inch water main along W. Fifth Avenue between Cooper Street and N. Broadway the week of June 4-8.

(South Knox County) Henry Haynes Road [Revised Work Hours, June 5-7] – KUB contract crews will implement a road closure at 124 Henry Haynes Road, daily between 8 a.m.- 7 p.m. starting today, June 5, through Thursday June 7, as work is performed on the natural gas distribution system in the area. The road will reopen to normal traffic flow outside of listed work hours, and local traffic access for residents will be maintained. Follow-up advisories will be issued as necessary.

June 1, 2018 UPDATE –  ZONE 2: Following the Memorial Day holiday, KUB contractor Classic City Mechanical worked in the 8100 and 8200 blocks of Chesterfield Drive and Bennington Drive installing mains and services this past week. Next week, contractor crews will continue work on these sections of Chesterfield Drive, Bennington Drive, and the 8300 block of Corteland Drive. ZONE 3: Crews from KUB Underground Construction and East Tennessee Pipeline worked in the 8300 block of Chadwick Drive, the 8400 block of Corteland Drive, and the 600 block of Broome Road this past week. Next week, crews will move to the 8400/8500 block of Corteland Drive, the 8300 block of Chadwick Drive, and the 500/600 block of Broome Road.

Customer driveway paving, with temporary lane closures in the immediate work area, will also be completed at the south end of Mellen Road next week. Pipe-bursting crews will rehabilitate the sewer main in off-road easements along back property lines between 1964 and 2028 Cherokee Boulevard next week.

Work will continue in the area around Henry Haynes Road next week, with daily road closures between 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., as previously communicated. Alternate routes around the closure include Tipton Station Road, Henry Haynes Road, Babs Road, W. Marine Road, and Chapman Highway. Appropriate traffic control measures will continue to be in place to alert motorists of the traffic pattern change.
